BIOPHILIA
“The appearance of the natural world, with its rich diversity of shapes, colors, and life, is universally appreciated.” Perhaps that is why we place it in art. Symbolisms in movies, metaphors in books. Perhaps that is why we place it in our surroundings. How many studies have shown the positive mental effects flora can have on a person? How many friends and family members have you heard preach the virtues of white noise? It pleases us, lulls us, brings us comfort.
Scientists believe it is why we have thrived as a species. Why we could locate the most fertile land and nurture new life. It is an urge, a need, a desire. And we have a love of all living things. An need to be in contact with nature and the natural world.
Anytime we attempt to break the barrier between indoors and outdoors, then we are proved to be the life loving addict. A subconscious naturalist. The balconies and sliding doors. The skylights and atriums. Your love of wooden floors and furniture. Your carefully crafted collection of Bonsai. All amount to evidence that humans do not find solace in the industrial forests we create for ourselves. We are meant to be with nature, and our subconscious knows this, even when we do not.
